Here are 10 practical, time-tested tips to make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.

 Plan Ahead

1. Give yourself enough time.
Packing always takes longer than you expect. A good rule of thumb:

• Studio or 1-bedroom: 1–3 days
• 2 bedrooms: 3–5 days
• 3 bedrooms: about a week
• 4+ bedrooms: two weeks or more

Starting early lets you pack thoughtfully instead of frantically.

2. Invest in fresh packing materials.
New boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper are worth the small investment. Used boxes and old rags can introduce dust, allergens, or worse, collapse under pressure.

3. Learn from the pros.
A quick YouTube search for “decluttering before a move” or “packing hacks” can be surprisingly motivating. Watching people who love organizing can give you ideas (and momentum).

4. Hire professional movers.
Professional movers bring experience, efficiency, and the right equipment to protect your belongings. Many even supply boxes and packing materials. Book early, especially in summer, when moving companies are busiest.

5. Start with your essentials.
Gather items like passports, birth certificates, insurance papers, and sentimental keepsakes. Pack them first, and keep them with you, not on the moving truck.

6. Declutter before you move.
Moving gives you a natural reset. If something doesn’t fit your new home or lifestyle, it’s time to let it go. Use the “$20 in 20 minutes” rule: if it can be replaced for less than $20 in under 20 minutes, don’t pay to move it.

7. Make two piles, and two passes.
Your first pass is a “No” pile: donate, sell, or toss. The second pass is your “Yes” pile, everything worth taking. This method keeps decisions simple and boxes lighter.

8. Pack least-used rooms first.
Start with storage areas, guest rooms, and seasonal spaces. Save the kitchen, bedding, and main bathroom for last, you’ll need those until the very end.

9. Use smaller boxes for heavy items.
Books and dishes belong in small boxes; pillows and linens can fill larger ones. Your movers (and your back) will thank you.

10. Label everything clearly.
Write the room, a brief description of contents, and note if the box needs to be unpacked right away. A few extra words now will save hours of frustration later.

 Bonus Tip: Unpack With Purpose

Once you’re in your new home, open one box at a time. Put everything from that box away before starting the next. Breaking them down as you go keeps your new space organized and clutter-free from day one.
